Twenty-two MND Latin students traveled to the Ohio Junior Classical League Convention, held in Columbus, to expand their Latin acumen and learn more about Roman culture. The convention gathered around 1,000 Latin students and teachers from around Ohio and invited them to socialize and compete in graphic, performing arts and academic competitions related to the convention’s “Di hominess quasi pilas habent” theme. “Di hominess quasi pilas habent,” translated as “the gods use us humans as toys,” centralized the event as students ventured to Latin workshops, learned more about the OJCL, experienced Roman artworks and culture, and engaged in competitions against other students in activities at the convention.
MND students competed in several contests and many of the students came back with ribbons and awards marking their achievements. The group made a banner reflecting the theme of the convention and received an “excellent” rating from the judges.
“The Latin Convention was a weekend of learning, growth, and friendship. It was so much fun and I can’t wait to go back next year!” exclaimed sophomore Latin student Katie Buescher, daughter of Eric and Anne Buescher of Sharonville.
Alex Peed, junior Latin student and daughter of Kathleen and Bentley Peed of Batavia, also attended and won 8th place for her Mark Anthony costume. She said, “The convention was a wonderful opportunity! It was a great experience and very educational. I would love to do it again and would recommend it to all Latin students.”
“It was a great weekend of competition and camaraderie,” added Emily Motz, senior Latin student and daughter of Gail and Mike Motz of West Chester.
Latin teacher Rick Tanner, also known as ‘Magister Tanner,’ recalled the event and said, “I am extremely proud of the 22 students who went and they certainly represented the best MND traditions. For only being our second time in attendance, we did a great job!” He is currently making plans to attend the convention next year, being held February 26-28, 2010.
