Mount Notre Dame
Providing a challenging, college-preparatory curriculum for young women over three centuries.
Block Scheduling
Go Around the Block with Us
Mount Notre Dame prepares our students for the collegiate experience from the moment they walk through our doors. Our block schedule closely models what students will encounter when they move on to college.
Students have a two-day rotating schedule that includes four 85-minute blocks, a 25 minute lunch, a homeroom period and Flex Time each day. Laboratory science classes (biology, chemistry and physics) meet every day; one day is an 85-minute lecture/group work period and the other is a 40-minute lab period. There are additional half-block elective classes that meet every other day for the entire year.
Some benefits of the MND schedule include:
- Students have more opportunities for cooperative and creative learning activities.
- More time is available to reflect, to process information and to master critical thinking skills.
- Teachers have more time to meet with students individually and to build stronger working relationships with them.
- Block schedule gives students the opportunity to take more elective courses.
- The learning experience in science class is enriched by the additional time allocated to laboratory work, 25% more than the state requirement.
Here is what our students are saying:
“I love MND’s schedule; it was a major reason I chose this school. I like how we only have to worry about four classes each day, and we have two days to complete homework assignments.”
“I like having only four classes each day. I know it will prepare me for college because it has taught me responsibility and how to manage my time.”
“I love block schedule! I think it takes away so much stress when it comes to managing my classes. I am taking all Honors and AP courses, and the workload can be challenging; but having two days to do assignments and being able to touch base with my teachers on the ‘off’ days is really awesome!”
