Coach Grayson FitzHugh

Coach FitzHugh was hired to coach golf at Mt. Notre Dame in August 1999. In his second season, his team went to the OHSAA Division 1 state golf tournament for the first of four consecutive trips to Columbus. That year they finished seventh and the following year they improved to sixth.
In 2002, the team was undefeated in matches and won the State Championship. They became the first team to repeat as state champions in 2003, winning by twenty strokes and setting a tournament record at the time. He was named the National Golf Coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association. The team returned to Columbus in 2009 and finished ninth. Through 2010 his record in golf is 186 wins and 69 losses.

Three players from Coach FitzHugh’s teams have qualified as individuals for the state tournament. Megan Quinlan-Waters qualified in 2004; Kara Brinkman qualified twice (2007, 2008) and Katie Carstens made it in 2008 as well.

Finding that he greatly loved coaching athletes at Mt. Notre Dame, he became an assistant freshmen basketball coach in 2000. He was promoted to varsity assistant in 2003 and was part of the staff that won five state titles in six years from 2004 to 2009. He became the head freshmen coach in 2006. His first team completed the season undefeated. His record as freshmen coach before 2011 was 75 wins and 13 losses.

Still eager to coach sports he loves, Coach became the assistant reserve softball coach in 2009. He becomes the reserve head coach in the upcoming 2011 season. Since August 2006, he has served as Assistant Athletic Director at Mt. Notre Dame.

Coach FitzHugh has been a member of the Professional Golfers of America since 1997 and has taught golf for fourteen years.

Coach FitzHugh graduated from Langley High School in McLean, Virginia in 1968. After two years of playing baseball at the University of Virginia he transferred to Washington & Lee University and graduated in 1972. He moved on to Duke University to earn a Masters in Business Administration in 1974. He has played, coached, studied and loved golf, basketball, and baseball for more than fifty years.
