Meet the Coaches

Russ Mackey

Coach Mackey has been involved with Mt. Notre Dame’s lacrosse program since it’s inception in 2005. He served initially as a volunteer to the teams founder and first head coach Don Johnson (MND’s long-time field hockey coach), then as an assistant varsity coach for two years, and he is now in his third year as head varsity coach. As head varsity coach, his team has a record of 29-8-1, winning the GGCL in 2009 and finishing 2nd in 2010. The team was ranked 9th in the state in 2009. As an assistant coach under head coach Stu Newman in 2007, the team also brought home GGCL championship honors.

Coach Mackey was selected GGCL Coach of The Year in 2009 by his coaching peers and he is a Level I US Lacrosse certified coach. He has also been certified as a US Lacrosse Official, although he does not pursue an active role in officiating. Four of his past players have gone on to play lacrosse on the collegiate level, including University of Cincinnati’s Women’s Lacrosse Senior Captain Natalie Starvaggi (’07), Sara Kuhlman ‘10 - High Point University, Steph Schmalz ‘10 - Canisius College and his daughter Erin ’07 who played for Lafayette College in Pennsylvania.

Coach Mackey is married to Karen, who also happens to be a high school coach (basketball). They have three children, Erin, Sandra MND ‘08 and Kylor. They reside in Lebanon.
