August 2011

Dear Parents and Students,

As part of Mount Notre Dame’s commitment to providing the best possible academic environment for our students, your daughter will be participating in several standardized assessments throughout the school year.  The testing program at Mount Notre Dame is designed to help our students examine their achievement strengths and weaknesses, their interest in careers, and their preparation for college entrance.  The Ohio Graduation Test component meets the requirements set by the State of Ohio for high school graduation.

Potential for achievement is measured by several different standardized tests.  One group of tests, the Educational Planning and Assessment System, includes the EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT.  EXPLORE is taken by freshmen and provides baseline information from which academic growth can be assessed and evaluated.  PLAN, a pre-ACT test, serves as a midpoint review of students’ progress in high school.  It is a powerful predictor of level of success on the ACT.  The Coursework Planner in the score report sheet helps students develop a coursework plan for their remaining high school years based on their PLAN results and their future educational and career plans.  Sophomores also have the option of taking a preliminary SAT test, the PSSS, which will serve to identify strengths and weaknesses for college entrance exams.  Juniors and seniors are strongly encouraged to take both the SAT and the ACT as part of their college selection process.

The EXPLORE and PLAN tests also include interest inventories.  Freshmen and sophomores will have an opportunity to answer questions which will help them identify possible areas of career exploration.

All MND students are required by the State of Ohio to pass all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test in order to receive a diploma.  These tests will be given in October and March each year.

The testing schedule can be found on the second page of this document.  Students in the Billiart Scholar Honors Program will receive an additional flyer which outlines their modified testing program.  I encourage you to become familiar with the program and discuss it with your daughter.  She will be hearing more about the program through the Guidance Department.

Should you have questions, they may be addressed to your daughter’s counselor or to Mrs. Kellie Siler, testing coordinator, at 513-821-3044 x 151 or ksiler@mndhs.org.

Sincerely,

Karen M. Day
