Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser - "There's No Place Like Home"

Habitat for Humanity and Kenwood Town Centre have teamed up to create a special challenge - groups are asked to build a mailbox with a housing theme.  MND's Art Department was invited to participate and decided to accept the challenge!

Art teacher Mrs. Shelly Brauer and her Studio 3 students worked together to design a unique mailbox.    Using the Wizard of Oz as their inspiration, the class chose the theme "There's No Place Like Home" and created an amazing sculptural piece.  The MND piece goes against the stereotypical idea of a mailbox - it sits upright in a vertical orientation, rather than the traditional horizontal mailbox.

Mrs. Brauer commented that the students did a tremendous job of putting it all together. Many details of the movie were incorporated in the design, including the melted witch, the poppy field, the yellow brick road, Toto, the bicycle, the swirling tornado, the hot air balloon, and more. All elements work together very well into a unified, cohesive work of art.  The team needed a little over two weeks to complete the challenge.

Student artists included Katie Hartman, Jordyn Hunter, Maggie Kissing, Alex Lohman, Ellen Godbey, Kaitlin Peed, Stephanie Morris, MacKenzie Recker and Monica Haugen.

The competition will draw designs from 12 area schools.  During the month of April, mailboxes will be up for a silent auction. The school with the highest bidder will be declared the winner. All money from this fundraise goes to support Habitat for Humanity and their mission of building affordable housing for those in need.
