Youth Philanthropy Council

Philanthropy is empowering.
Mount Notre Dame is proud to be a regional leader in Youth Philanthropy education!
For the past six years, MND has had an active, growing Youth Philanthropy Council. MND's YPC has granted over $25,000 to local, regional, national and international organizations. These grant monies have been made possible by generous donations from Mr. Roger Grein, The Denny and Lois Doyle Foundation, Steve Kissing, Tony and Jennie Reed, Doug and Nancy Manwaring, as well as other donors and student fundraising efforts.
Growing and Developing
Philanthropy, literally meaning "love of humanity" is alive and well at MND! The MND Youth Philanthropy Council is a student-directed organization committed to learning about philanthropy and the role it plays in a healthy and vibrant community. For the 2011-2012 school year, the MND YPC was given gifts totalling $5000 that were invested in Cincinnati area non-profits, helping our community address some important social needs. This will was a year of exploration, fund-raising, decision-making, visiting, deliberating and celebration for our student philanthropists.
We once again partnered with Starfire University, and offered the opportunity for six of their students to join us on our council this year. Starfire (www.starfirecouncil.org) provides opportunities for differently-abled individuals to have a post-secondary educational experience by using the community as their classroom. We were proud to have this opporunity to work with these fine young women.
This year, we added a new dimension to our program. The student leaders chose to focus their energies on the theme of ART. All of the monies we granted will support programs at non-profits that involve any type of art program (visual, musical, theatre, dance, film, sculpture, photography, etc.), or perhaps agencies that promote the arts or art education. This twist will allowed us to reach out to new and exciting organizations who will be excited to have the opportunity to apply for our grant monies.
2011-2012 Grant Recipients: The YPC members chose three organizations as recipients of this year's awards! Healthy Visions (www.healthyvisions.org) was given a $2500 grant to support an art-related competition they are having for the schools they work with promoting healthy lifestyles. Camp Joy (www.camp-joy.org) was given a $1500 grant to fund a music program for their campers, and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly (http://cincinnati.littlebrothers.org/) was given a $1000 grant to fund the painting of a large mural.
The grant checks were given at an Awards Presentation at Mount Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. (Photos coming soon.)
Magnified Giving
In addition to their YPC responsibilities, YPC members are invited to work with a local organization called Magnfied Giving, to mentor other high schools as they develop their own Student Philanthropy programs. These student leaders will stay in work with the teachers and students from those schools, and meet with the MND's YPC moderator on a regular basis to help run this non-profit organization dedicated to teaching young people how to give of their time, talent and treasure.

Student Comments
“MND YPC and the city-wide program makes a difference in a variety of ways. The overall title "Magnified Giving" is accurate in countless ways. When someone funds the YPC program, they help educate the potential philanthropists of the future, and provide lessons that will last for a lifetime. In addition, the money, which is then granted to the various non-profit agencies, makes a difference in not only the agency, but whomever the agency provides aid/help to. Therefore, when someone provides money to the YPC program, it doesn't just perform one specific, small task and is then used up; it helps create a ripple effect, helping to make our community a better place, one agency at a time. I honestly can say that the program follows through with its original mission, and I am proud to be a member of MND's Youth Philanthropy Council.”
“YPC has helped me grow in more ways than I can count. When I started I was shy and not sure what I was getting myself into. Two years later I am a college-bound senior who is leading her own small group, has conversed with executive directors of non-profits, and who spoke at the city-wide banquet. You aren't just investing in a non-profit when you invest in YPC, you are investing in what those students can become.”
“YPC is more than a club to the girls at MND it is a passion that helps each girl develop into a person who will carry the spirit of philanthropy through the rest of her life. Philanthropy allows the girls of MND to grow not only spiritually but socially by encountering "real world" experiences such as having a conversation on the phone or in person, reading RFP's, scheduling site visits and so much more.”
